E-commerce platforms are software programs to create websites and manage them. There are a lot of platforms available on the market now. However, in this article, we just focus on the three most outstanding open source solutions: WordPress, Drupal, and Magento. Hope you like it!
Key features for all CMS
- The tools for searching for and find the content they are looking for ( indexing, searching and retrieving content) and making your site be friendly to the search engine.
- Allow users to manage and update content after it has already been published.
- Allow users to customize the appearance of the website, arrange how elements will be displayed.
From the first time, WordPress has been developed as the user-friendly blogging platform. Over time, WordPress has been preferred by so crowded community and nowadays, it comes with thousands of themes and plugins. 27% of the world’s websites have been built by WordPress and 30% of online store’s plugins are Woocommerce plugins. The main reason for the popularity of WordPress is right in its easy to use the feature. if we compare WordPress, Magento, and Drupal, WordPress seems to be the easiest of use. Websites can be set up quickly and learning how to use WordPress is intuitive. In case you get stuck, you can find the solutions that are available on the Internet or community.
The feature that makes WordPress be different from the others is creating content with an inbuilt editor to add text, images, and video or cutting or pasting from MS Word. Organizing content using page menus or post/product categories is also simple, enabling visitors to find what they are looking for easily.
So, it can be said that WordPress is most suitable for less complex websites and for users who need a platform that doesn’t require lots of technical knowledge.
With many users and developers, Drupal seems to be the most powerful among the platform mentioned in this article. However, it is strong also means that it will be the most complex CMS and just people with more technical understanding or developer can use it.
If your website is huge and you need a platform that can help you process lots of data, Drupal is the optimum choice. Drupal is widely preferred by university, media and government websites because it is highly stable, able to handle significant qualities of data and accommodate heavy traffic and be scaled up with little difficulty. However, the condition for those great things is more hosting resources, dedicated server or cloud hosting rather than shared hosting. Moreover, there are over a huge number of modules available to extend its functionality and they are updated frequently.
Overall, if you have enough technical knowledge and need a big, powerful website, don’t forget Drupal.
If we mention a platform that specializes in e-commerce, it will absolutely be Magento. Because it is open source and free so developers can build what they want from that platform. Nowadays, people have not been using Magento just for creating an online store, they have also taken its advantages in enhancing user engagement, making navigation a breeze, improving conversion rate and boosting sale volume. Magento’s biggest competition comes from WordPress with WooCommerce installed. The difference between Magento and WordPress is Magento is developed especially for E-commerce while WordPress is an eCommerce framework that’s bolted onto a general-purpose CMS. If you want to operate a huge online store like eBay, Amazon, Magento should be the first choice.
We cannot say what will be the best and what will be the worst because it depends a lot on your purpose. One suggestion for you is before applying any of them, analyzing SWOT and planning for yourself.
